About the Artist

The ocean light and historic setting of Cape Cod, Massachusetts first inspired Sue to paint.  She spent her childhood summers exploring the shorelines and outer barrier beaches. Sue has been painting for over 30 years and continues to paint and explore there as well as in the Pacific Northwest, Southwest, Tropical Pacific, Japan and more.

When working in watercolors Sue loves how the paints combine in infinite ways and even the sometimes unexpected results that occur.

Her paintings often reflect a ‘Sense of Place’ of a scene. The interaction with people and their environment is unique to each ‘Place’ around the world. When we see a Lighthouse, Statue of the Buddha, or Red Weathered Rocks, we know the type of environment it is and often its exact location.

The Medium of Watercolors

Well of course there is the word ‘water’ in the term watercolors. This is one important clue to painting with Watercolors. The higher the ratio of water to pigment/paint, the lighter the resulting color or tone will be. Even when painting with just one color/pigment, areas of your painting can be darker and others lighter. Here is a painting example of ‘Chatham Light in Sepia’.

Whether one has been been painting for years or is a ‘beginner’, a sense of adventure is the key. How does one create controlled edges and shapes and at other times encourage the paints to flow and partially combine? The gift to the painter is the exploration of process. What will these pigments do on the watercolor paper today?
